's Letter

Dear Host Family, My name is Henrik. First, I want to thank you for considering me as your host son. I truly appreciate the chance to be part of your family. I would now like to tell you a bit about myself. I would describe myself as relaxed and calm. I don't stress easily, even in difficult situations, because I try to see things this way: if I can change a situation, there's no need to worry, and if I can't, worrying won't help anyway. I also try to remind myself in difficult situations how often I thought I wouldn't be able to handle something, and in the end, it turned out just fine. Since I developed this mindset, I don't really stress out anymore, and it has helped me stay calm and handle situations properly. Staying positive is another important trait I have developed over the years. I've learned that pessimism often makes situations worse, which is why I try to focus on the positive rather than the negative. During my exchange year, I will try to handle difficult moments or phases like this, so I can get the best out of my year in America. I am a very social person and enjoy spending time with others, especially my friends. In my friend group, I'm very outgoing and always up for anything. During the holidays, I meet with friends every other day, and even when we have school, I see them twice a week. With my friends, we often just go out, talk, eat, or drive around on our E-scooters. When I'm around my family, I tend to be more quiet and easygoing. Most of the time I spend with my family is during meals. We almost always eat together, which is uncommon in Germany. Other activities I do with my family include going to football games at an arena in a big city, where we have season tickets, going shopping, and, of course, going on vacations. At home, I live with my parents, Katja and Sven, and my grandparents, Marie and Gunter. My family is very hardworking and organized. My mother owns her own beauty salon, and my father has his own engineering office. For the family members who don’t live with us, we are still very close. We have a good relationship and get along very well without any major problems. We regularly meet and spend time together, for example on weekends or during holidays. Sometimes we go to a holiday house, stay in a hotel, or visit a city for a short trip. Celebrations like Christmas and Easter are especially important to us, and we always spend them together. Overall, we are a very close family. My favorite memory with my family is when we were in Barcelona and rode around on E-scooters with a really nice and chill tour guide who showed us some unique views of the city. This trip to Barcelona was a very special experience that I will always remember. I want to go to America mainly to improve my English, because English can be very important later in life, particularly for your career, vacations, or even everyday life. Hopefully, I can become fluent in English to have the best opportunities for future jobs. What interests me the most are the high schools, especially the school system. I want to try out new things through the many subjects in a big high school, so maybe I can find new hobbies or strengths. Compared to Germany, the environment is really modern; for example, my school building is pretty worn out and old. My school building was built in 1887. I'm really excited about going to an American high school, feeling the spirit, and building my own real experience. I also hope to grow personally. I want to know myself better as a person, understand what I am best at, and hopefully have a clearer vision of what I want to do in my life. In this exchange year, I hope to become more independent and manage my daily life sort of on my own. Living in a completely new environment will challenge me in many ways. Different routines and daily situations will push me out of my comfort zone. In my one year with you, I would love to really get to know the American culture. I would like to cook some American dishes with you, see a basketball or football game, explore nature in the U.S., or experience days like the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, or Memorial Day. All of these experiences would mean a lot to me and help me truly connect with your culture and family life. Overall, I am a friendly, open-minded, and active person who enjoys trying new things and meeting new people. I am really excited about the opportunity to become part of your family, share my culture with you, and learn from yours. Thank you very much for considering me, and I hope to create many great memories together. Kind regards, Henrik
