Liv
's Letter
Dear future host family,
I’m Liv and I’m from France. As I’m writing this letter, I cannot describe how excited and scared I am to meet you and experience a new life in the USA. Since I was ten years old, I always wanted to do an exchange year, but I wasn’t thinking that it would be more than just a dream. I am a shy person at first, but as we spend more time together, I become more outgoing. I love discovering new places, new people and mostly new food! I love to talk about different topics or my day, but sometimes I also like to spend time alone in my room. My friends describe me as a funny and honest person.
I don’t do sports because of a hip problem, but this problem doesn’t completely prevent me from doing sports, I still do school sports and I go once a year skiing, which is my favorite sport; it’s also that I don’t have much time outside classes. I don’t have activities in a club outside the high school either, but I would love to try new activities like theater or pottery, I love discovering new things. When I have free time, I like to read a book or try manual activities. If you love to discover new movies, I will be by your side to watch them with you! I’m passionate about cinema. My top 4 favorite shows are Stranger Things, Hunger Games, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Game of Thrones. I try to watch movies as much as I can for my culture, I have a huge list of « classics movies » to watch. I listen to a lot of music in my daily life. The artists I listen to the most are Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Tate McRæ or again Franck Ocean. I really enjoy pop music but I also listen to some jazz usually. My favorite school subjects are English and history, I find it cool to learn about the past of my country and historical events, but I’m really bad in the science . I love baking for my family even though I often bake cookies. I would love to cook something from France for you, like croque-monsieur, even though I don’t cook often. I am not complicated with food.
I live in a small town not too far from the city, I like living in between the countryside and the big city. Since middle school I have the same friends group of 10 girls and even if we see each other everyday at high school, we like to do things like going to the cinema or just eating fast food on the weekends. I am not really a party girl, but I prefer spending my weekend to do calm activities like board games with my family and friends or walking in the city. I have one older brother, who is annoying but occasionally nice with me, and my parents are divorced, but it’s not a big deal for me since they’re in good terms. We live one week at my mom’s house and one week at my dad’s. I have one cat that I love so much, we spend a lot of time napping together, but since I’m a toddler I’ve always wanted a dog, I really love pets. For my future, I never knew what I wanted to do, even now I don’t know. When I think about my studies and my career plans, I tend to move towards the audiovisual field. When I was younger and even now, me and my friends used to make scary mini movies, which were not really good but it was funny to make and the more I think about it, the more I tell myself that it could be great. I also think that this experience could help me, first to become more mature and independent, but also to know what I really like and what I want for my future.
I want to live in the USA for multiple reasons. First the culture, I like American traditions. In France we also celebrate Halloween and Christmas and it’s my favorite time of the year, but I think Americans have a better way to do it. I would love to carve pumpkins, see decorated houses, discover a Thanksgiving meal like in the movies or decorate the house with you, which I love to do at home. And secondly, go to an American high school, with the lockers and football games, test famous fast-foods like raising canes and shopping in huge malls. And of course, spending time with my future host family, discovering who you are, your routine, possibly having a new sister or brother, helping with the house and doing new activities.
What would you like to show me about your daily life and culture ? Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and I hope to see you soon!
