's Letter
Hey there,
I’m Vivien from Germany. So you can get to know me better, and to decide if I do fit in youre family I`d like to describe my everyday life to you.
Right now, I live in the Netherlands close to the German border with my parents and my 14-year-old brother. We`re living in a house with a garden, but no pets—although we used to have a cat.
On school days, I wake up at 6:15 AM and take the bus into the city, which takes about 20 minutes. At school, I love meeting my friends and having fun with them. My favorite subjects are the languages (English, German, French, and Dutch), as well as art and PE. I’m not the biggest fan of math or the natural sciences, but I manage.
Outside of school, I have lots of hobbies. I play violin and piano, sing in a choir, and play soccer—although often I skip practice because of homework and then do pilates at home instead. In my free time, I like drawing, playing piano, or spending time with friends. We often just hang out outside and talk, but we also do sleepovers or small parties together.
Family time is really important to me too. I like going for walks with my mom or playing board games with everyone. We usually have a series we watch together—some of our favorites are Brooklyn 99, Young Sheldon, and Sherlock. If I get the chance to live with your family, I’d love doing activities together as well—like cooking or baking, going on walks or hikes, or just helping with everyday things like shopping for groceries. Something that I`d really like to experience in the U.S. are the Christmas and Thanksgiving traditions. So don`t hesitate to ask me for helping with decorations or food. I `d like to experience it the same way you do.
As for my personality, I’d say I’m open-minded and humorous with friends and family. Around new people, I can be a bit shy at first, but that usually goes away after some time. When it comes to food, I’m really easy. I like almost everything and don’t have any allergies. The only thing I prefer to eat rarely is fast food (I heard Americans eat it a lot, so I thought I’d mention it 😅).
In my exchange year I hope to improve my english skills and to gain confidence, by making new friends and adapting myself into the new culture. Don`t worry if I don´t talk that much in the beginning- it`s probably just my english.
I’m very thankful for this opportunity, and I’m excited to get to know a new culture and everyday life in the US. Thanks for reading my letter and maybe we`ll share our daily life soon.
Best,
Vivien
