's Letter
Dear American Family,
It is with extreme pleasure that I humbly write this letter to your noble household. Though I have not met you yet, I hope and pray that you are in good health
as I am here. To avoid wasting much of your time, I will move straight to introduce myself.
My name is Salma, but Smiley is my little name. It is Smily because many people that I have met across the journey of my life have confessed to me that I am very friendly and smile a lot, which sometimes does light the spirit of others. I currently attend one of the newly established schools which used to be an aberration to Ghana’s educational system, a STEM school.
My father’s name is Abdul-Karim and Abiba is the name of my adorable mother. Also, in the person of my loving stepmother is Faiza. I have five siblings, an elder sister who is called Sherifa. She is 22 years of age and also a graduate of one of the universities in Ghana, UDS. Following my elder sister is a boy in the person of Abdul-Wahid. He is 17 years old and is currently awaiting his WASSCE results, which he believes with extreme enthusiasm will come out with flying colors. After my elder brother is I and my twin sister. Salwa, my twin sister doesn’t only look exactly like me, but we are also a big part of each other’s life. Throughout my life, Salwa has always been that one person I could count on, irrespective of the number of times we fight, we will be seen laughing together the next minute. Salwa holds a deep connection with me to the point we share a language only we understand. Salwa and I are the last born of my mother. which at this point legibly indicates that my two siblings left will be my cute little stepsisters. sidika is the name of the older, she is 4 years old and likes exuding her importance despite her age. Her younger sister, Shiham is two years old and has just started to walk. Everyone above plays and forms a big part in the family’s harmonic and euphoric nature.
We do many things together as a family, but what mostly I enjoy doing with my family is watching a movie. My father’s occupation as a teacher hardly spares
him much time in the day. So, it always brings joy and delight to my heart when we watch a movie together at night.
As a girl child in the household, I am entitled to certain responsibilities at a certain age. At home, I am entitled to responsibilities such as keeping the house clean, by sweeping, wiping, and arranging things in order. also, I am crowned with the responsibility to help out in the kitchen and at this point be able to cookwhich I enjoy doing as it brings joy to my heart when someone enjoys my meals. Also, scribing the bathroom, fetching water, doing laundry, and taking care of younger siblings in the absence of my parents are my responsibilities at home.
At this point, I will proceed to inform you about my interests. There are a lot of things that I am interested in and enjoy doing every day, but the ones I mostly appreciate are cooking, singing, and learning about mysterious scientific discoveries. As a child who grew up close to her mother, I enjoy being in the kitchen and helping to cook. And from all the experience that I have gained from assisting in the kitchen, I can now all on my own prepare a different kind of meals like banku with okra soup, rice balls with palm nut soup, ‘toozaafi’, and many others. In retrospect, this reminds me of the plain rice with beans stew that I once prepared for my sister and she complimented it tasted so good we can open up a restaurant with it.
Also, singing is one of the things that I like doing, singing lifts up my spirit and makes me feel like more than just alive. I mostly enjoy singing with my twin sister.
Lastly, I enjoy learning about mysterious scientific discoveries. This has become a keen interest due to my curiosity to know about the world we reside in. My favorite mystery is the Bermuda Triangle.
Throughout my life, I have met many people, but few have become friends with me. And of all of them, maliha is the one I mostly get to spend time with. what we enjoy doing together includes, watching movies, talking about what we have learned about the time we missed out on each other and also visiting tourist sites.
...I dream to be a chemical engineer in the future. I hope to be employed by a company after graduation. After gaining immense experience and savings from working in the company, I dream of starting my own company.
In conclusion, I would like my host family to know that I like caring for people around me and resent quarreling or fighting. At the end of this scholarship program, I hope to gain a lot of experience and knowledge. I also dream of meeting new people in my life and making a lot of friends and family that I will forever keep close to my heart.
Thank you for your time and attention.
