Filip
's Letter
Dear host family
My name is Filip. I was born in Poland. My mother's name is Karolina, she has a degree in philosophy and postgraduate studies in banking, my mother works in finance.
My father's name is Krzysztof, he is a graduate of technical studies: power engineering and political science at the university, currently my father works in trade and marketing.
I have two younger brothers, Tymon, 15, and Jerzy, 13, both in primary school.
With my family we spend most of our time travelling and visiting historical places such as castles and palaces. We also go hiking in the mountains with my mother and brothers when we visit my grandparents.
I am currently attending high school and finishing the 2nd grade. I am in the bilingual class. The second language I am learning is German, and I am also doing maths, geography and English. My class has 34 students, so it is quite big. I have some very good friends in my class, we are quite a harmonious group.
Within science, I like science subjects such as chemistry, mathematics and economics the most. I am very curious about what subjects I will learn in America and how this knowledge will be taught. I am also wondering if there will be a chance to continue my German studies and how I will cope if there is a Spanish course, which I have never learnt.
During the week, after school, I attend acrobatics and climbing classes on the climbing wall. I really like these sports, they allow me to relax, build up my body and develop my strength.
For the last 5 years I have been a scout in the ZHR (Union of Polish Scouts named after Zawisza Czarny).
I am currently attending courses to prepare for the role of scout leader. In scouting I take part in annual summer camps, which last 4-5 weeks, as well as winter trips and weekend camps. In scouting, I achieve different levels by completing various challenges and trials set before me. In 2023/2024 I lead my own troop and managed 5 boys, I served as a deputy. My role was to take part in the activities organised by the troop, train the members of the troop and support them in various scouting tasks.
I am interested in history, especially the history of the Second World War, so in the summer of 2024 I volunteered at the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising (https://www.1944.pl/ ), where I was responsible for guiding visitors through the halls and taking care of the youngest visitors. My volunteer work lasted for 1.5 months, but when school started I was unable to continue.
I am excited about the possibility of leaving, I want to test myself in a new environment, I am afraid of missing my parents and brothers, but I assume that we will be in contact by phone / social media. I hope that my host family will be open, friendly and supportive.
I am an open-minded, friendly, hardworking optimist, ready to learn new things 😉 .
