It doesn’t take long to discover why Costa Rica, the “rich coast,” draws more visitors per year than any other Central American country.   Pristine beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts frame a country filled with tropical forests, lush valleys, active volcanoes, rare wildlife, and vibrant cities.  Here, the native Mesoamerican and Andean cultures overlapped, creating a dynamic population that grew even more complex with the later introduction of Spanish, African, and Chibcha influences.

The Costa Ricans, or ‘Ticos,’ are known for being laid back, friendly, sociable, and always proud to share their unique culture and beautiful country with travelers. As a volunteer, you will be able to engage with these communities on a personal level and experience their relaxed pace of life. By collaborating with locals on service projects designed to uplift the specific social, economic, and environmental conditions of the area, you will learn firsthand about Costa Rica’s rich history, diverse culture, and current challenges in the modern world.
