Exciting Leadership Programs for AYUSA Students!

AYUSA is excited to announce our partnership with Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY), a premier youth leadership development organization. Since 1958, HOBY has enhanced the lives of 345,000 high school students through leadership development programs. These programs provide participants with the skills necessary to have a positive impact in their home, school, workplace and community.

AYUSA students that are between the ages of 15 and 17 are automatically eligible to attend a HOBY Leadership Development State Seminar in their respective host state!

  1. What are HOBY Leadership Development Programs?
  2. How can students enroll?
  3. How can students learn more?

At HOBY's leadership development programs, participants will:

  • Learn how to think, not what to think. Hear multiple views on important issues and learn how to evaluate each opinion from a critical perspective.
  • Improve your leadership ability. Discover your own leadership strengths through hands-on learning exercises, games, and small group discussions.
  • Develop goal-setting skills. What do you want to accomplish? Set your sights high and learn how to achieve your goals, step-by-step.
  • Listen to exciting speakers and interact with today's top leaders. Participate in panel presentations with today's leaders in business, technology, government and civic service.
  • Increase your understanding of the democratic process. What does “freedom” really mean? Discussions will focus on democracy, free enterprise and volunteerism.
  • Understand the importance of volunteerism. Discover the impact that you can make when you "give back" through community service.
  • Have fun! Meet other students your age from throughout your host state. Enjoy planned activities.
AYUSA students have the opportunity to attend two types of HOBY Leadership Programs.

State Seminars
Each Spring. HOBY conducts leadership development seminars for high school students in each of the 50 states. Effective immediately, AYUSA students between the ages of 15-17 are officially eligible to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The state seminars are three to four days in duration, beginning on a Thursday or Friday and ending on Sunday. The registration fee for the seminar is $325 and will include all seminar expenses including meals, lodging and training materials. Students are accepted on a space available basis and asked to provide their own transportation to and from the seminar.

HOBY/AYUSA Leadership Conference in Los Angeles
The Leadership Conference is a week long program designed to introduce participants to today's leaders in business, government, social welfare, medicine, education, religion, and other fields.

  • Collaborate with a service organization in Los Angeles to complete a meaningful hands-on service project
