Study Abroad
AYUSA promotes world peace and understanding by sending American students abroad to appreciate and recognize the richness of other people and their cultures. Qualified staff in the U.S. carefully screen participants to insure the most successful exchange possible. An AYUSA Study Abroad program provides many life-long benefits to students, including:

  • increased self-confidence and capacity to make decisions
  • greater knowledge of world issues
  • better understanding of how others see the U.S.
  • greater flexibility and respect for other cultures
  • increased awareness and appreciation for the institutions of community and family
  • ability to speak a second language
  • the competitive advantage of international experience when seeking college admissions and employment

High School in the U.S.A.
AYUSA provides excellent educational opportunities for international students who wish to study at an American high school and experience American family life. Foreign students learn English, gain an understanding of American culture and lifestyle, create a "home away from home", and build lifetime friendships. Students report many other benefits from their year in the United States, including:

  • improved proficiency in American English
  • a broader perspective on world issues
  • a new appreciation of their own families and countries
  • increased self-confidence
  • better understanding of U.S. institutions and culture
  • the competitive advantage of international experience when seeking college admissions and employment
  • more tolerance of cultural and political differences

Simmi Fisher, a student from Minnesota, finds that her year abroad continues to hold many positive, long-lasting effects which will benefit her forever. "As an AYUSA alumni, I am happy to recommend the program to many young people interested in studying abroad. My experience in Italy for an academic year was outstanding. I had many expectations going into the program, and each one was fulfilled. The friends I made, the family who hosted me and AYUSA's Italian representatives all share in the credit for my success. Everyone did an excellent job of helping me become accustomed to my new home. Someone was always there for us if we had a question or problem. I was inspired by the people I met. I hope to make a contribution to my community and country just like AYUSA's Italian representatives did."

Dmitri Kapitonov, a student from Russia, said of his AYUSA experience: "I want to thank the U.S. government, AYUSA and all organizations that put this program together. I got to learn what real life is like in the U.S., and not like in the movies. It helped me think more openly and "internationally," gain more respect for myself and my home country, my customs, and my dear American friends and their culture. Thanks for everything you do for exchange students and for all you'll do for the ones in the future."
